KFC Cayman History

KFC Cayman Locations

KFC Corporation, based in Louisville, Kentucky, is the world's most popular chicken restaurant chain, specializing in Original Recipe® and Extra Crispy™ (we have Hot & Spicy in Cayman). It all started with one cook who created a soon-to-be world famous recipe more than 70 years ago, a list of secret herbs and spices scratched out on the back of the door to his kitchen. That cook was Colonel Harland Sanders of course.

KFC Cayman also has the Colonel's Crispy Strips, with various home-style sides and freshly made chicken sandwiches and wraps.

We have localized some items on the menu to fit with our Caribbean surroundings and tastes. We have the best tasting French Fries and chicken wings that are SoGood, such as our delicious Hot Wings or our Sweet Chili Wings, which are sweet & spicy. And you know what? There’s still a cook in a kitchen in every last one of them, freshly preparing delicious, complete family meals at affordable prices.

KFC was the first Quick Service Restaurant franchise in the Cayman Islands and continues to be the market leader in providing the best tasting and highest quality chicken products.

Operated by Fast Foods Company Ltd, a 100% Caymanian owned operation, KFC opened for business in 1976 at Merrens Plaza (since renamed "Bay Town Plaza"). There are currently three KFC restaurants on Grand Cayman, located at Bay Town Plaza, Shedden Road and The Strand.

  • Harland Sanders is born in Henryville, Indiana.
Some say his first word was 'chicken', but it was more likely 'ma' and or 'pa'. Until they crack time travel, we'll never really know for sure.

  • 1920-29 Colonel Harland Sanders

No university for Harland. It wasn't that kind of world anyway.
Instead, he lives a life of country song, working his way round the southern states as a steamboat pilot, railroad fireman and farmer.
He may have owned a hound dog, but he definitely got a taste for southern style chicken.

  • 1930 Roadside Motel and Cafe

    Harland is 40.

He buys a roadside motel and cafe in Corbin, Kentucky. Always an avid cook, he puts his talents to use and starts to serve his take on southern fried chicken to the public. But what about his unique blend of 11 herbs and spice? For now, it's just a thought…

  • 1935 Kentucky Fried Chicken

    The restaurant is doing well.

So well that State Governor, Ruby Laffoon commissions Harland as "Kentucky Colonel" for outstanding achievement in the community. So the Colonel really was a Colonel.

  • 1939 Colonel Sanders

Finally, Harland perfects his blend of 11 Herbs and Spices.

We can't say what they are, it's top secret. Only a handful of people have even known the full recipe. Some believe this group included Evel Kinevel, the rock band KISS and Dolly Parton. Sorry, not true. They all asked, but we held our tongues.

  • 1950 Colonel Sanders

Colonel Sanders dons his dapper white suit for the first time.

From now on, he never appears in public wearing anything else. In winter, he favours a heavy wool number, switching to light cotton for the summer months. But always white and always double breasted.

  • 1955 Colonel Sanders

Disaster strikes: Interstate 75 opens up and sucks away trade.

The restaurant closes and at 65 Harland has to start again from scratch. Down, but not out, he takes his first social security check, pressure fryer and recipe, and sets out to sell the idea of southern fried chicken the Colonel way.

  • 1957 The First Bucket

    The First Bucket

Say "bucket of chicken" and you think KFC. The famous paper bucket that KFC uses for its larger-sized orders of chicken has come to be recognized worldwide. Its fame spread even faster as KFC locations adopted the iconic rotating bucket sign.

  • 1964 Growing Kentucky Fried Chicken Franchisees

A growing network of franchisees across the US.

Nine years later and with a growing network of franchisees across the US, Harland feels it's time to slow down. He is 74 after all. So he sells the Kentucky Fried Chicken Company to a group of investors for $2 million. But he keeps his hand in, making sure quality is still high and lending his image to the brand.

  • 1965 North England Kentucky Fried Chicken

Southern style chicken comes to the North of England.

The first KFC restaurant in the UK opens in Preston. The crowd goes wild and soon more restaurants spring up all over the country.

  • 1976 First Food Franchise

    Cayman's First Food Franchise

The first food franchise in the Cayman Islands was KFC in 1976, which opened at Merren’s Plaza (now renamed Bay Town Plaza)

  • 1980 Kentucky Fried Chicken Bucket

Despite his passing the KFC brand continues to grow, with restaurants now all over the world.

  • 1995 Second KFC Franchise

    Second Cayman KFC Franchise Opens

Cayman Islands open their second KFC franchise at the Waterfront, Downtown, George Town.

  • 1997 Third KFC Franchise

  • 2006 New Kentucky Fried Chicken Logo

KFC unveils a new Colonel Sanders logo.

The new logo depicts Colonel Sanders with his signature string tie, but for the first time, replaces his classic white, double-breasted suit with a red apron. The apron symbolizes the home-style culinary heritage of the brand and reminds customers that KFC is always in the kitchen cooking delicious, high-quality, freshly prepared chicken by hand, just the way Colonel Sanders did 50 years ago
